I’m Russell Libby with Northwoods Urology of Texas and I’m excited today to be talking to you about a procedure which is starting to be done for prostate cancer. The reason I’m excited to talk about this new procedure is that it really reduces the amount of leakage of urine after prostate surgery for cancer. What we’re gonna talk about today is the retzius-spare robotic prostatectomy.
Let’s just talk about the name of the procedure for a second. The retzius-spare prostatectomy is different than the traditional robotic prostatectomy radical prostatectomy, rather, because it doesn’t drop the bladder from the pubic bone. There’s a space called the retzius space that sits behind the pubic bone and in front of the bladder. When we drop that space for prostate surgery, the natural tissue planes are disrupted and these tissue planes are very important for holding urine.
What we can actually do is spare the space of retzius and not drop the bladder. We can remove the prostate from below, below the bladder and get it out as for a radical surgery. We can still perform a great nerve spare. But the amazing thing about the surgery is that men often they do have a catheter after surgery, but when it comes out, it’s amazing the results and seeing how quickly they’re able to hold their urine. I have patients who have had their catheters out and literally don’t leak urine. We can sit down and have a discussion.
It depends on your risk factors, how old you are, your weight, your ability to hold your urine before surgery. There’s a lot of things that go into it, but it’s amazing the difference that you can see when you spare the space of retzius. This surgery can be done here in The Woodlands and I’d be happy to talk to you about it.
