How to Talk to Your Partner about Male Infertility
June 12, 20209 Common Causes of Testicular Pain
August 14, 2020The no-scalpel vasectomy technique was first performed in China in 1974. Over recent years it has become more and more popular in the United States. The no-scalpel vasectomy is essentially the same as vasectomies that were done for many years. Its primary difference is that the vas deferens are controlled and grasped by the surgeon in a less traumatic manner. This results in less pain and fewer postoperative complications. Here are a few reasons why you should consider the no-scalpel vasectomy for your permanent birth control.
You want a smaller chance at infections
One of the best parts about a no-scalpel vasectomy is that you are less likely to get infections when operated on. Unlike traditional vasectomies, which are still effective, no-scalpel vasectomy reduces the time of procedure and how invasive it is upon your body. This leads to fewer infections. No-scalpel vasectomies are a technique to do the vasectomy through one or two small punctures. This puncture is made into the scrotum and generally requires no suturing or stitches. The tube (called the vas), which carries sperm from the testicle, is cut and sealed in order to stop sperm from leaving. The procedure usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Since the procedure simply interrupts the delivery of sperm, it does not change hormonal function – leaving sexual drive and potency unaffected.
This procedure is done with the aid of a local anesthetic called Xylocaine (similar to Novocaine). The interruption of the vas which is done with the no-scalpel technique is identical to the interruption made with conventional techniques. The no-scalpel technique is simply a more elegant and less traumatic way for the surgeon to control the vas and cut it. The vasectomy is becoming a more common way for men to apply birth control, as it is often safer and easier for men to recover. Over 500,000 men in the U.S. get a vasectomy every year.
It’s quicker and is a same-day procedure
No-scalpel vasectomy represents a significant improvement over conventional techniques in that it is less traumatic and shortens vasectomy recovery time. A no-scalpel vasectomy is usually last less than 30 minutes and allows patients to return to their lives quicker and easier. This means that you also will be able to get back to work sooner rather than later. Recovery is also quicker, and most symptoms can be managed with Tylenol or ibuprofen. However, you must set yourself up for success by preparing for your procedure. In addition, you will need to make sure your prostate is healthy. You will need to see a urologist about the best ways to recover and stay healthy after your procedure.
Less pain
If you are worried about pain when it comes to getting a no-scalpel vasectomy, think again. Although there can be some discomforts and bleeding after the procedure urologists report minimal pain that can be managed. This doesn’t mean that you can return to physical activity right away. You’ll want to give yourself a week to recover. In addition, you should know that semen can remain in your system for up to 6 months. Keep that in mind if you plan on having sex soon after your operation. You will want to include more measures of birth control just to ensure your partner does not become pregnant until that 6 month period is over.
A no-scalpel vasectomy can be reversed
If you and your partner are worried about making this permanent decision, know that a no-scalpel vasectomy can be reversed. As James Roland wrote for Healthline:
“Reversing a vasectomy to restore fertility is possible for many men who have undergone the procedure. A vasectomy reversal involves the reattachment of the severed vas deferens. It’s often requested by men who had one or more children with one partner and later on want to start a new family.”
Although this procedure can be a permanent birth control, it doesn’t have to be. It means you have more control over your body and your life choices. A no-scalpal vasectomy also takes the burden off of your spouse of managing birth control. Consider this key factor if you are looking into having a no-scalpal vasectomy.
