BTL Emsella for Urinary Incontinence
BTL Emsella is a breakthrough treatment for urinary incontinence and overactive bladder, now provided at Northwoods Urology.
Urinary incontinence affects over 25 million Americans, mostly women. The most common type of urinary incontinence is stress urinary incontinence (SUI), which occurs when the bladder leaks urine due to exertion, like physical activity. Aside from exercise, it commonly occurs when you cough, sneeze, laugh, or even jump. For women, the cause of SUI is most often attributed to vaginal childbirth and/or hormonal changes that happen with age, like menopause.
The effects of UI are not just physical. It can cause women to experience depression, miss time at work, lose sexual intimacy and confidence, or avoid beneficial exercise.
How SUI Happens
Stress urinary incontinence occurs when the tissues of the pelvic floor get stretched and increase in laxity. This can cause the bladder to sag over the anterior wall of the vagina, interfering with proper bladder function, especially when it is full.
BTL Emsella Treatment
BTL Emsella is a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment for stress urinary incontinence and urge incontinence. Unlike most UI treatments, BTL Emsella is delivered comfortably while you sit in a specially designed chair. You remain fully clothed while the chair uses electromagnetic pulsing technology to target the affected tissues of the pelvic floor, stimulating the muscles quickly to build up muscle strength and restore proper support of the pelvic organs. During the treatment the pelvic floor muscles are strengthened dramatically, tightening the vaginal walls and decreasing urinary incontinence and urge incontinence. Patients also notice an increase in sexual satisfaction as a result of the treatment.
This treatment is the first of its kind. Cleared by the FDA, the Emsella uses a high-intensity electromagnetic field, similar to an MRI, to activate motor neurons in the pelvic floor. The treatments only last 28 minutes, during which the BTL Emsella causes 11,200 contractions. That would be as if you performed 11,200 Kegel exercises.
This treatment has become so effective that, in as little as 3 weeks, patients have reported their incidence of stress urinary incontinence improved by 95% or more. It is recommended that patients receive 2 treatments a week for 3 weeks, for a total of 6 treatments.
Recovery
Most patients report that they experience no discomfort or pain during the treatment. One of the greatest benefits of the BTL Emsella treatment is that there is no downtime or recovery time. Some results are typically experienced instantly, and improve more over time. Again, this treatment is non-invasive and non-surgical. You can receive your treatment and immediately return to your normal daily life.
