Hello, my name is Peggy Francis, and I’m a nurse practitioner here at Northwoods Urology. Today, I’d like to talk to you about Emsella.
Emsella is a chair that you sit in that delivers an electromagnetic force that allows your pelvic floor muscles to relax and contract. Let’s back the train up for just a minute and talk about pelvic floor muscles. Those are the hammock of muscles that your urethra and your rectum pass through, and in woman also your vagina. When you urinate, pass gas, have a bowel movement, those muscles should get out of the way and you wanna strong enough and under your control that when you need them, you can contract them and keep things closed. So some providers call these Kegel exercises. I prefer to call them what they are. They’re pelvic floor muscle exercises. Everyone should be doing these exercises every day to keep those muscles strong and under control. However, when they get really lax, sometimes you will benefit from having them electromagnetically stimulated to contract and relax faster. That’s what the Emsella chair is all about.
Emsella is FDA-approved, but not covered by insurance. So it is a cash-only procedure. You come in and sit on a chair. We set you up with the right connections, so you’ll sit on a specific spot in the chair, and we flip a switch and it will stimulate your pelvic floor muscles to contract and relax in an amount and an intensity that you’re not able to do on your own. Emsella is a great procedure, but does not work by itself. So you have to do your own exercises in addition to doing Emsella.
If you have any questions about this, please don’t hesitate to call. We will offer you the first seating in the chair at no charge, so you can see how it feels, and then six treatments are recommended, either done twice a week for three weeks, or done once a week for six weeks. So again, if you have any questions about Emsella, don’t hesitate to call, but also be prepared to do your own exercises also.
