Hello, my name is Peggy Francis. I’m a nurse practitioner here at NorthWood Urology. And I’d like to talk to you today about PTNS.
PTNS stands for Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation. Percutaneous means just under the skin, Tibial Nerve, right by that nerve on your lower leg and stimulation because we hook it up to a piece of equipment, that stimulates the tibial nerve and then goes on up and stimulates the sacral plexus, which is that group of nerves that innovate the pelvic floor muscles. PTNS, is a procedure that is done weekly for 12 weeks. I’ve also done this procedure every other week for 12 treatments, in patients that find it difficult to come in once a week.
PTNS is specifically indicated for patients with urinary frequency, urinary urgency, have not responded well to bladder medications and have either urge incontinence or mixed incontinence. Very important that you have specific diagnoses in order for insurance to cover this and for it to be effective. PTNS is very effective. It works well in patients who have had problems with previous bladder medications and it works well in patients who are not able to do any of the other treatments that are recommended for overactive bladder.
If you have any questions about whether you would qualify for PTNS or whether it would be effective for you, please don’t hesitate to make an appointment. Come in, let’s talk about it. He had those shoes and we’d be happy to mail you a brochure.
